Today we start reviewing yet another affordable Toy Grade model by Syma the X5HC. In our Syma X5HC review we’ll talk about upgraded version of the commercial sales hit Syma X5 and X5C. Much like the X8H series, the X5H series focus on the recent feature implement in low-cost drones, the Altitude Holder also known as Barometer Set Height. This feature was much more common in higher-budget drones, however, some companies such as Syma and JJRC have been investing in this feature for low-cost drones. This feature, which we will explain further on in full detail, is very useful for both photography and videography. For a very affordable price every drone enthusiast or just someone who wants to learn how to fly a quadcopter can enjoy such feature together in a very easy to control drone packed with a decent quality camera. Let us move on to discuss what makes X5HC stand out from the rest.

Syma X5HC Features

First of all let’s analyse Syma X5HC features. This affordable medium sized (33 x 33 x 11 cm) quadcopter features one of the most rare to find functions for drones within this affordable budget. This feature is Altitude Holder (also known as Barometer Set Height) an amazing feature for photography and videography lowers, as it allows the drone’s  sensitive barometric pressure sensor (barometer) to measure air pressure and keep your Syma X5HC locked at that height, hovering autonomously, without much pilot’s input . Therefore pilot can focus on recording the video or taking photos while Syma X5HC hovers steadily. Even in fairly windy days this quadcopter will be able to maintain height while pilot pays attention to other important things. Besides this innovative feature, Syma X5HC also includes, the nowadays more common, Headless Mode function for easier orientation despite where the drone’s front is pointing at. This feature is great for both beginners and children as it makes the drone much easier to control. Other common features which can be find in X5HC are the LED lights for night flights and the 360ยบ aerial stunt with just the push of a button on the 2.4 GHz remote controller.

Camera

Now let’s talk about the camera, unfortunately the Syma X5HC camera seems to be the same one used in X5C (yet to be confirmed) which isn’t bad since it was a decent camera. However it does not represent an improvement from previously model which is very disappointing. There already are many same price quadcopters with better camera. This camera has 2MP for photos and 1MP for video. It saves your recorded files into a Micro-SD card. Photos and videos are taken and recorded through buttons on the remote controller.

Controller, Control range and flight time

syma-x5hc-controllerTalking about the remote controller, yet another weakness of Syma, the RC controller is very simple, but that’s not where the problem lies. Unfortunately X5HC only has a control distance of 30 to 50 meters (it may reach 60 or 70 meters in perfect flight conditions but do not expect it often). However still very below the 100 meter average range for drones within this price range. Syma is known for their low range products which may be a negative side to many drone enthusiasts. Another negative aspect of Syma X5HC is the flight time. This and range have always been Syma’s two biggest weaknesses. If price and ease of use are their strongest characteristics than flight time and control distance are definitely the weakest. Powered by a 3.7 voltage 600 mAh lipo battery, X5HC has a flight time between 5 to 7 minutes, the same of X8H series. Not the worst flight time, but far from the best value for your money. Battery takes around 130 minutes to completely charge and can be charged via USB which is a big plus as it allows you to plug it in to your computer. Thus making a good fit for travelling. Let’s hope Syma makes big improvements in these two characteristics (flight time and control distance) in their next updates.

Syma X5HC is great for :

Syma X5HC is targeted at beginners and children. An easy to control quadcopter, safe to fly, fairly durable (made from ABS plastic and propellers and motors are protected from crashes and hits by propeller guards around them) with enough features and specifications for learning and practicing. On the other hand the Barometer Set Height (Altitude Holder) feature is something you won’t find in almost any drone. It’s a powerful innovation in the low-cost drone market and for this price you won’t find a cheaper model featuring Altitude Holder. Therefore, if you are looking for a Toy Grade photography and videography drone at a very affordable price to gift someone or for yourself to practice this Syma product deserves your attention.

Conclusion

What do you think of this quadcopter? Are you a fan of Syma looking forward to upgrade their previously model without investing much money?
