As you all already know, 99% of drones these days come with a whole heap of extra functions and features just to make a better first impression on the potential buyers. Among these things, people tend to focus on battery duration and control range… But there’s an awesome function that often gets by unnoticed. I am, of course, talking about the altitude hold function. Drones that have it are able to hover steadily in the air, maintaining their altitude and recording perfect aerial shots. It’s something most of you will greatly appreciate if you are buying your drones for the sake of video recording. If that’s the case, then you should take a look at these top 10 drones with altitude hold function. They are listed from the cheapest model to the more expensive one. In other words, there is going to be something for everyone, so stick around. I might just help you make up your mind.
UNDER $200
Cheerson CX-10D
This is, by far, the smallest altitude hold quadcopter on this list. In fact, this little guy is marketed as the world’s smallest drones with the altitude hold ability. It is basically a miniature 4-channel device working via 2.4 Ghz remote connection. This colorful little fella will set you back for around $20 and you can expect hours and hours of great fun with it. It comes with 6-axis gyro system and LED lights and is able to fly for up to 8 minutes. All in all, if you are buying a first drone for your little ones, this little guy might be the drone your looking for! Pun intended!
Holy Stone HS110W
2nd altitude hold quadcopter on our list is Holy Stone HS110W. It’s one of the best drones in this price range when it comes to features. This affordable drone has a whole heap of useful features. Among one key return, headless mode, FPV and 6-axis gyro, Holy Stone HS110W also has the ability to hold its altitude automatically. It can transmit live video feed for up to 50 meters and its maximum control range goes up to 200 meters. With a flight time of up to 10 minutes (and a charging time of one hour) this guy could very easily be the best budget drone currently available on the market. Extra batteries are relatively cheap.
Syma X8HG
If you are willing to step up with your budget and give out an extra 50 bucks, you should definitely invest in this one. It’s a sturdy drone with a dedicated 8MP camera capable of recording HD videos. The Syma X8HG comes with a bunch of sensors and features and, of course, it is able to hold its altitude. When you combine all of the above mentioned with its crystal clear 8MP camera, you will get an exceptional photo/video shooting drone for just $150… And it does not get better than that in the price / performance ratio.
$200 to $400
Parrot AR. Drone 2.0
If you are looking for one of the well-known drone manufacturers, then look no further because Parrot is among the industry’s giant names. For slightly over $200 you can get this bad boy that comes with a 720P HD camera capable of live video feed and recording at the same time (while flying of course). It is controlled via your smartphone or tablet (supports both iOS and Android devices) and can reach a maximum distance of cca 120 meters before control becomes laggy.
Hubsan X4 H501S
If, in addition to altitude hold mode, you are looking for a little bit of extra durability in a drone, then you cannot go wrong with Hubsan’s top tier model – the X4 H501S. This is a fully-fledged drone with brushless motors (which is what provides it with that extra durability I mentioned) and a full HD camera that is bound to make for some amazing aerial shots. It communicates via 5.8Ghz connection with its controller which is able to provide excellent lag-free control for up to 300 meters. With flight duration ranging from 15 to 20 minutes (depending on various factors such as weather conditions, camera status and so on) and its competitive price tag of only $270, this bad boy can also be considered among the best budget drones on the market.
RC Logger NovaX 350
RC Logger may not be the most known drone manufacturer on the market, but from time to time they surprise is with a top-notch drone. That’s the case with their NovaX 350 which is a nice looking black altitude hold quadcopter with red finishing touches on its blades. It is equipped with a bunch of bunch of useful features such as task point flying, one key return to home, GNSS, S.M.A.R.T and others… Despite all of this, it does not come with a camera (if it did, I reckon it would cost way over the $400 mark) but what it does have is a GoPro compatible camera gimbal for those of you who want the crème de la crème of aerial shots.
$400 to $600
Antix GPS
Antix finally made a top quality drone for a relatively affordable price. Even though the price might seem a bit too high at first, especially considering the fact that this drone does not come with a camera, in fact it’s quite the contrary given all those extra features it has. Not only the features actually, but its sturdy (shock resistant) frame and a dedicated controller that can transfer video and audio up to 500 meters. Combine that with a total flight time of around 25 minutes (20 when the camera is mounted) and you got yourself a great choice for around $500.
Walkera QR X350
Walkera’s newest drone looks absolutely breathtaking. It sports a unique white design with red and silver finishes near its blades. What’s interesting about it – its middle portion looks a bit like a helicopter’s cockpit which, truth be told, is quite easy on the eye. For a drone with this price tag, it sure doesn’t break down when it comes to specifications and features. It is equipped with one key return home function, altitude sensor, GPS altitude hold system, GoPro camera mount and brushless motors for that extra bit of pure durability.
$600 to $1000
DJI Phantom 3 Professional
For just over $800 you will get a brand new DJI Phantom 3 Pro drone and a top notch 4K UHD action camera. I believe you probably know a fair share of information regarding this drone, but despite that, we are going to take a closer look at some of its specification to see what is so special about it.
First off, it is equipped with an insane number of features, some of which I barely knew existed before. In addition to that, it has a flight time of up to 25 minutes. That’s not so special, but what’s special is its max transmission distance which can go up to 5 kilometers. Yup, you got that right – 5 freaking kilometers. That’s way more than any other drone in this price range. Additionaly, it has dual GPS + GLONASS positioning modules which help excel at altitude holding. All in all, if you are looking for a professional aerial video recording platform, you can’t go wrong with the DJI Phantom 3 Professional.
Autel Robotics X-Star
This beautiful looking drone is a proper competition for DJI’s Phantom 3 Pro… in some aspects. For instance, it also comes with a 4K UHD camera mounted on a 3-axis gimbal stabilizer for optimal aerial shots with no stuttering. In addition to that, it is capable of providing you with live video feed up to 2 kilometers away from you. The similarities between these 2 models don’t stop there as X-Star premium also features dual positioning modules GPS and GLONASS and comes with a whole heap of extra features, just like the Phantom 3 Pro.
Over $1000
Yuneec Typhoon H
Typhoon H is the very first hexacopter on this list. It is packed with interesting (and unique) features, which are the main cause of such a huge price tag. It has a real collision avoidance system that is handled through the built in sonar sensors. They allow the drone to detect obstacles nearby and help it evade them appropriately, thus making up for a much safer flying experience. It has a 3-axis motorized gimbal that is able to provide with 360 degree video feed. Another very important thing about this drone is that it comes with a ST16 controller which has a dedicated 7 inch Android touch screen that shows live footage of your drone’s view.
DJI Phantom 4
And this is it guys, we have come to the best (and most expensive) drone with altitude hold function. It is, of course, the king among kings – DJI Phantom 4 V2.0. Keep in mind that this drone is one of the most expensive pieces of tech out there, but it surely does make up for its price with amazing specifications on an off the paper. It includes a MASSIVE amount of extra gear (no wonder it’s called Executive Kit Bundle, eh?) which are just the icing on the cake of its amazing specifications. With a total flight time of up to 84 minutes (combined time of all the batteries that come with the package), a 5-kilometer control range, long range system, carbon fiber propellers, special backpack, even a second MINI DRONE, and to top it all off, a whole bunch of smart flying systems that allow it to do all kinds of useful tricks and commands; there is no doubt that this thing is meant only for professional users… or those who have the will (and money) to become one. If you are one of those people, you will be happy to know that it is currently on a massive sale. Its regular price goes around $2900 but for a short amount of time it is available for just above $2K!
